StretchStretch Experiential Marketing

Award-winning experiential marketing agency, Stretch Experiential, is set to the end 2015 on a high following no less than seven new business wins across a range of clients and industries.

The Cape Town-based agency has been growing from strength to strength as it continues to deliver strategic and innovative concepts and brand activations for its clients. Off the back of that smart thinking and airtight execution, several new clients have awarded the agency their business, while some existing clients have eagerly renewed.

One of the biggest new accounts in Stretch’s portfolio is Standard Bank. An important pillar for the bank is its Graduate Recruitment Programme. Stretch will now head up the activation and strategic roll-out for how the bank talks to, and engages with, graduates and potential new recruits.

Tamsyn Els, the Head of Young Talent in South Africa, at Standard Bank: “The partnership between Stretch and the Standard Bank Young Talent team, was created through a shared vision to innovate, engage and create a memorable brand experience, for Africa’s Young Talent, with the intent of leading and disrupting the thinking of a generation”

Another key component to the account is Stretch’s ability to utilise its social media capabilities. In addition to the activation piece of the business, the agency will also run the social media for Standard Bank’s Graduate Recruitment Programme. A dedicated and skilled social media manager has been appointed to effectively manage this new growth area for Stretch.

Following a three-way pitch at the end of 2014 for Chivas’ Win the Right Way launch, Stretch has been appointed the experiential partner for the 2015/16 financial year across multiple campaigns, including the second edition of the brand’s ‘The Venture’ in SA.

Mother brand, Chivas Regal, has also appointed the agency for the remainder of 2015 and into 2016, launching the pinnacle of the Chivas range, Chivas The Icon. Stretch created the world’s most luxurious vending machine for the launching of a prestigious R50k bottle of whiskey in South Africa.

Glenlivet awarded Stretch its experiential business after the agency won a four-way pitch and will now be responsible for rolling out a number of campaigns over into 2016, including Whiskey Live in November and also the Legacy Talks; four talks throughout the year which feature a variety of speakers in the business world.

In need of a creative way to activate in the SA market, Twisp has appointed Stretch as its experiential agency for the 2015/16 season after a three-way pitch. Stretch have introduced the Twisp Sensorium creating a multi-sensory experience at a variety of locations across SA.

Existing client, Lipton Ice Tea, put Stretch up against another agency and again realised the agency’s value by renewing their contract for a third year in a row. Stretch will be managing Lipton’s summer activations.

“The majority of the new business comes from pitching against other agencies. While this is a traditional way of winning new clients, it’s an incredibly valuable exercise for our team,” says Mike Silver, Stretch Experiential Managing Director. “The most exciting development for the agency is that many of these wins come with extended partnership agreements attached to them with Stretch even playing a lead role in some cases’.

The British collaborators shot to fame with their orchestral-led tracks ‘Rather Be’ and ‘Real Love,’ and have recently appeared at renowned events such as The Secret Garden Party, Bestival and Field Day. Their culture clash of bass, beats and soaring strings evokes the sounds of classic Massive Attack and Basement Jaxx, all with a brand new electro twist. Electric Summer are also thrilled to announce SA’s most-loved Electronic DJ Duo, Goldfish, will be co-headlining along with Clean Bandit at this year’s festival.

Dominic Peters and David Poole have re-invented the very concept of what a DJ should be, taking their live performances to a whole new level. Their genre-defying live mix of sax, double bass, keyboard and pounding house beats have touched a nerve with audiences across the world. They will be joining Electric Summer to spread some musical love to their home crowds.

As a brand new edition to the South African Market, Electric Summer will push the boundaries, offering an eclectic mix of cutting edge production that is set to transform the stages of Cape Town’s Hamilton’s Club and Johannesburg’s Zoo Lake into a rockin’ Summer Music festival experience.

Chris Thomson

One incredibly happy Huawei fan’s music dream experience has just come true! Huawei and Huawei Culture Club are thrilled to announce that Chris Thomson from Cape Town is the winner of the “Make It Possible” competition.

This once-in-a-lifetime contest kicked off in March 2015 and included an all-expenses-paid trip for two to any music event anywhere in the world. To stand a chance of winning, entrants had to download and enter on the #HuaweiCultureClub app (available on Android or iOS), select their chosen music event and destination from anywhere in the world and – most importantly – get as many people to share and like their entry link across social media as possible. The person with the most shares and likes at the end of the two-month competition period is the winner.

And Chris is that person! With over 31,023 shares, likes, tweets and re-tweets, he beat out all other entries, and had almost 3,000 more likes and shares than the runner-up.

Says Chris: “Winning this competition was totally worth the few Facebook friends I lost from getting everyone to share and like my entry. Thank you HAUWEI and HAUWEI CULTURE CLUB!”

This is the biggest consumer competition Huawei has run in South Africa through its Huawei Culture Club platform, with the prize being valued at over R100,000. Huawei received over 4,600 entries with 96,000 shares, likes, tweets and re-tweets in total across all entries. To date, there have been over 15,000 downloads of the app. The total social media impressions or “opportunities to see” exceeded 32-million, a staggering achievement.

“Music forms a large part of Huawei’s strategy to engage with the South African consumer in a meaningful way,” says Yudi Rambaran from Huawei South Africa. “Through our Huawei Culture Club app and platform, we are giving consumers access to incredible music experiences they can’t get anywhere else. The ‘Make It Possible’ competition is a perfect example of this,” adds Yudi.

Chris and his travel companion will receive:

Two economy class return tickets from any main departure point in South Africa to the final destination city of choice;
Two double/twin rooms at a four-star hotel in the destination city of choice, for five nights;
A R10,000 spending allowance;
Two general access passes to the music event of choice;
Airport-hotel transfers.

Where will Chris be going? He chose to head to Croatia Rocks!

But that’s not all! To reward the top three entries, including the winner, each will receive a brand new Huawei Mate 7 phablet – the 6-inch flagship device from Huawei with its unique fingerprint security and an extended battery capacity.

Stay close to Huawei SA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and #FollowChrisHCC for updates, videos and photos from his #MakeItPossible dream trip. With his new Huawei Mate 7, Chris will be taking some awesome shots.

Oppikoppi launches the Uitgewaste Suenskoor vir Mans en Vruoens

Want to sing? Well, auditions are now open for what will probably become one of South Africa’s most internationally acclaimed, ‘more or less’ traditional choirs.

Hailing from Northam, the Northam Uitgewasde Seunskoor vir Mans en Vrouens (NUSMV), will be an independent, very low level amateur choir of sub-international standing.

NUSMV is looking for 20 – 30 key founding members. Judges will be looking for reasonable voices, but more importantly: conviction and verve. Entrants must know a few rock ’n roll anthem – more especially local rock ‘n roll anthems. Being in harmony with the founding values of the NUSMV ethics of tolerance, abundance, joy, rock ‘n roll, beer and respect, is also a pre-requisite.

Submit an audition video of you singing your heart out to any song by one of the following artists:

Johnny Clegg
Toya Delazy

Upload your video on Instagram or Facebook and tag @oppikoppi and use the hashtag #uitgewas. Entries opened on Friday, 22 May and close on Sunday, 14 June. The top 30 will go through to the next round of live auditions.

Successful singers will be given free entry to the Oppikoppi Festival, and will be required to join the choir for a few random performances, as well as the climactic performance with Francois van Coke. A few impromptu members will also be added at the festival itself.

The future of SA comedy has Soweto LOL’ing at the sold-out Savanna Newcomer Showcase

In partnership with The Times, Mzansi Magic and Kaya FM 95.9

Edgy, raw and clearly the place to be on a Sunday afternoon, this year’s Savanna Newcomer Showcase on 31 May was phenomenal. The sold-out show at The Soweto Theatre was packed to the rafters with SA’s top comedians, celebrities, media, talent scouts, casting agents and the comedy-loving public all keen to see the future of stand-up comedy.

The turnout was extraordinary. From 2.30pm, celebs started arriving for the shisha nyama pre-party and drinks, where the public got to rub shoulders with the ‘who’s who’ of the local it-scene. Famous faces included Loyiso Gola, Robby Collins, Bujy Bikwa, Trevor Gumbi, Maps Maponyane, John Vlismas, Ndumiso Lindi, Mpho Popps and TV personalities from Scandal! and Isibaya.

Kaya FM DJ’s Edsoul and Fang DaRhythm’s choice of Sunday afternoon house beats, coupled with the smoky scent of braai’d chops washed down with ice-cold Savannas, completed the authentic Soweto vibe. At 4.30pm when the buzz was at its most electric, the crowd was ushered into the theatre for the start of what promised to be a hilariously funny, truly special few hours of fresh, gritty comedy routines delivered by 19 new comics registered in the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards’ newcomer category.

Credit: Leeroy Jason

Credit: Leeroy Jason

As a pre-event in the build up to the main award ceremony that takes place on 15 August, the showcase was created to give the newcomers a platform to prove to the comedy industry what they’re made of, so that they can cast an informed vote. Initially an industry affair, the last couple of years have seen it rocket into a mainstream event on the comedy calendar, with tickets selling out in record time.

Flown in by Savanna from all over the country, all newcomers were given five minutes to battle it out on stage and to show the crowd what their funny bones were made of. Naturals delivered their sets with ease, while a few of the less witty comics were subjected to cruel (yet funny) heckling from the tear-streaked audience. No one bombed but the range of comedy skill from one newcomer to the next was quite apparent. Trending throughout the night, social media was on fire with tweeted one-liners and comments from the crowd.

Kagiso Lediga hosted the show and added to the fun, with special appearances from previous newcomer winners Loyiso Madinga (2014), Schalk Bezuidenhout (2013), Dillan Oliphant (2012) and Deep Fried Man (2011).

Voting only closes at the end of June, so keep your eyes open to see who the five lucky nominees will be and don’t forget to buy your ticket to Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards on 15 August at the Teatro at Montecasino. Tickets are available from Computicket for R280.00 and include access to the official VIP after party. Get yours here:

VODACOM IN THE CITY 2015 IS BACK WITH A NEW VENUE, FORMAT AND LINE-UP Featuring The Kooks, Milky Chance, The Cat Empire and more to come!

Joburg music fans, we’ve heard you – Vodacom In The City is back to bring the city yet another epic music experience!

Vodacom and Seed Experiences are excited to announce that Brit-pop, millennial rockers The Kooks will be joining the international line-up that includes the sensational German Duo Milky Chance and one of the world’s best festival bands, Australia’s The Cat Empire – with more acts to be announced soon.

The celebrated ‘Kooks’ graced our beautiful shores in 2013 as part of an exclusive brand campaign to the select few who were lucky enough to get tickets – and was met with rave reviews and lots of fans distraught who missed out.

This year Vodacom In The City will feature some important enhancements and changes, all guaranteed to make the music festival experience even more awesome for current and new fans.

The festival is moving from Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown to the iconic Zoo Lake, just outside the city centre. The move was prompted by several factors, the most important being the fans. Zoo Lake is a safer, more secure venue and the location makes it more convenient and accessible for the fans. Coupled with improved facilities and better logistics, Zoo Lake is not only a larger, outdoor green space but it provides for better infrastructure and comfort.
Goodbye Friday night, hello sunny Sunday! Vodacom In The City moves to Sunday 4 October, creating for the first time in its four years a full-day, day-time festival celebrating one of Joburg’s top green spaces.

The festival will now be longer too, starting at 10h00 and ending at 18h00, which means more hours of the best international and local music. And another first – fans of all ages are welcome, making it a family-friendly day out.

“The move to the iconic inner-city park plugs into a global trend”, says Brian Little, Seed Experiences Managing Director. “We are seeing more and more the global format of festivals being held in parks as a way to celebrate cities’ green spaces through music and lifestyle events.” Seed Experiences have a long track record of producing sold-out concerts and festivals at green, outdoor venues like Cloof Wine Estate, Zoo Lake, Emmarentia Dam and Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Top international acts
One thing that won’t change is Vodacom In the City’s reputation for securing top international artists.

The third international act to join Milky Chance and The Cat Empire on stage is The Kooks (, who return to South Africa to play for the first time at both Vodacom In the City and Rocking the Daisies. The British rock band has been making music and touring the world for more than 10 years. Their latest album Listen was released in September 2014 and represented a major shift in their sound, with influences from soul music and Afrobeat. Local fans will also get to hear The Kooks’ older hits from albums Konk, Inside In/Inside Out and Junk of the Heart.

Milky Chance ( became a viral online sensation after they released their self-produced single “Stolen Dance” on YouTube, which racked up over 30-million plus views in one month. They mix elegant electronic production with acoustic guitars and lilting, lush vocals and have mastered an original style that can best be described as singer-songwriter spirit mixed with electronic beats.

The Cat Empire ( is a jazz/reggae/funk/Latin/gypsy/hip hop Australian band that never fails to start a party and have been touring and releasing records for well over a decade. Their latest album, “Steal the Light” debuted top 20 charts in six countries. They have a massive army of fans the world over, and for very good reason. They deliver incredible musicality, humour entertainment and energy and are guaranteed to make you smile and dance!
